Last night, I witnessed perhaps one of the most stupid acts I’ve seen in a while.
Stupid because lighting a huge bonfire in your backyard, in the middle of one of the driest periods we’ve experienced this year, and allowing the embers to flare up and over houses, with tinder dry lawns, tinder dry houses, is just plain Stupid.
I’m not going to dress this up, I was pretty outraged by this, especially as it was done in the dark, by people who were not attending the fire – or if they were just didn’t care that the flaring embers were falling over peoples houses.
Fire is an opportunist. I’ve lived through a big fire, and it’s scary, how quick it all goes up, and how thick and choking and disorienting the smoke becomes. It burns, and it doesn’t stop.
So when Stupid people ignore the fire bans, and then build enormous bonfires, and set them alight in the dark hoping no one is going to be concerned by the thick blanket of smoke, or the flying embers…..well it truly escapes me how naïve people are. We are not in the depths of winter here in the Southern hemisphere, but in fire season…..our hot dry summers make it the perfect feeding ground for quick fires.
Comforting distressed elderly neighbours, we watched as the Country Fire Authority rolled in followed by several police cars, we could all return to our houses without having to evacuate this time. But what happens next time?
